College, Williams is participating in a Servant Leadership Learning Circle certification program. Facilitated by nationally-recognized leadership consultant, Ann McGee-Cooper, outcomes of the program include development of the art of serving others in learning communities, working with tools and coaching practices to help with difficult challenges of integrating servant-leadership philosophy in real-world work and deepening our capacities for using servant leadership. Four local organizations will be featured during pre-conference and conference workshops at the Greenleaf Center's 19th Annual International Conference June 10-13 at the Midwest Airlines Center, in downtown Milwaukee. Representatives from Marian University, Festival Foods, the Sophia Foundation and Johnsonville are all doing workshops· The theme for this year's Conference is "Institution as Servant." The Greenleaf Conference will provide a unique opportunity for leaders in business, higher education, health care, nonprofit organizations and faith communities to focus for four days on the practical benefits of servant leadership. Among the presenters will be Marian University's Dr. Mary Klein and Dr. Marilyn Bugenhagen presenting: GIFTS: Great Ideas for Teaching Servant-Leadership. The FDL Area Foundation has committed funding to support scholarships for non-profit leaders to attend the conference. Servant Leadership has also been embraced by Southwest Airlines, Toro Company, ServiceMaster, PPC Partners Inc., Japan Airlines, St. Joseph’s Hospital, United Van Lines/Mayflower Moving, Viterbo College and others. Dan Schalinske, a team leader at Festival Foods, Fond du Lac, explained, that many of the operating principles that Festival Foods employs is from Servant Leadership principles. These include the Boomerang Theory of "every business decision we make is based on one question: will it bring the customer back?" "Festival Foods focuses on serving people whether that be customers who shop the stores, employees and other partners," he said. Sr. Deb Golias, vice-president of Academic Affairs at Marian University, notes that service is one of the five core values of Marian University which "is committed to the education of the whole person, striving to nurture intellectual, spiritual, aesthetic, psychological, social and physical dimensions. The university's personal concern for students serves as the foundation for academic and student life as well as professional experiences." Finally, the Sophia Foundation has coordinated and members of the board (Valerie Graczyk and Gary Boelhower) have been facilitating non-profit learning circles in our community for organizations that previously received grants from the Sophia Foundation. Similar to the program above, the members learn skills and practice servant leadership principles. Two sessions have already been completed with a third to be held in May. About six nonprofit executive directors or program coordinators have attended. |
